While your education at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is cited as one of the nation's best values, we can help you make an affordable education even more so. During the 2008-09 school year, the most recent year in which figures are available, 84 percent of our students received need and non-need based aid that was awarded through the School of Mines or from outside sources, whether in the form of grants, student loans, scholarships, third party funding and/or work-study for a total of over $13.8 million.
For students who graduated during the 2008-09 school year, their average Federal Student Loan borrowing was $14,854, which is significantly lower than the national average. This amount does not include borrowing by parents on behalf of the student or students who have opted to borrow private alternative loans, which in some cases are not processed through the School of Mines Financial Aid Office. Your level of borrowing could be significantly different than the average stated here and as with any average, there is wide variations in the amounts students borrowed to fund their education. Whereas some students did not borrow at all or very little to fund their education, others borrowed well above the average. Regardless, you should never borrow more than what you really need to fund your college education.
